Rob started working at the dealerships in 1977 after earning his degree from the University of Virginia. Rob learned the car business from the ground up and now as President is responsible for the day-to-day operations and overseeing all the dealerships, alongside his brother, Fred.
Rob and his wife, Bonnie, have two children, David and Lewis, who are both with the Modern organization, and they are proud to have three grandchildren, Lily, Emmy and Abby.
Rob is an avid golfer and he and Bonnie also breed, train and show Keeshonds. There have been lots of champions in their home but mostly they are beloved pets.
As if having an automotive business isn't enough, Rob spends some of his free time at home racing slot cars with family and friends. A true car enthusiast.
Fred got his feet wet in the dealerships starting in 1962 after attending East Carolina University and in that time he's done just about everything there is to do in a dealership. He and his wife Cabell have three children, Omnia, West and Brad. All three have followed in dad's footsteps and work right here at Modern. Fred and Cabell also have 9 grandchildren and their names are….well, when you see Fred ask him, he loves to talk about them. He also loves the outdoors. Hunting, fishing and boating are among his favorite things to do and when it comes to the family Pomeranian, Chipper, Fred is a big softie.
I was a typical kid growing up in Winston-Salem, the middle brother between Fred and Rob. I was very interested in automobiles and my first car was a rare 1929 Chevrolet roadster desperately in need of restoration. With the help of my dad, Jim Cook the longtime Modern Chevrolet shop foreman, and three parts cars, I finally completed the job. It was a beauty!
Construction was also a family business and I learned the basics working summers for my grandfather's company during high school and college. I have been involved in building ever since. I even did construction work serving in the military in Vietnam. As a custom homebuilder my most enjoyable project was building the house that Rob and Bonnie (Fowler) still call home.
My wife Daisy taught for many years in the Forsyth County School System and at Forsyth Country Day School. We live in a Lewisville home overlooking the Yadkin River, where we have enjoyed the company of a long line of rescued dachshunds. We enjoy watching our grandchildren play sports, and they play everything!
I became project manager for Modern Automotive primarily to oversee construction of the new facility for Toyota and Subaru in Boone, but it seems that Modern is in the construction business somewhere all the time. I feel very fortunate to be finishing my career working with my two brothers, five nephews and the wonderful Modern Automotive family.
Omnia followed his dad, Fred Fowler, into the car business and started working part-time in the Modern dealerships in 1985. He went full-time in 1991 after graduating from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Go Vols! Omnia is currently dealer principal of the Modern Toyota store in Winston-Salem.
Omnia and his wife Jennifer have four children, Ashton, Garrett, Eliza and Wyatt. When Omnia isn't overseeing operations at our Toyota store, he and Jennifer spend much of their spare time watching the kids participate in all their various activities. He also likes to play golf, deep sea fishing and collecting old baseball memorabilia and has a sizable collection of baseball cards.
As one of the fourth generation of Fowlers at Modern, Fred's son, West, loves the outdoors second only to his love for the family business, which he joined in 1993. That was a big year for West as he was also married that same year. He and his wife have 3 children. West was born and raised right here in Winston-Salem and attended Mount Tabor High School then went on to graduate from Appalachian State. West took such a liking to the Boone area that he was happy to take on the role of Dealer Principal for Modern's two High Country dealerships; Modern Toyota of Boone and Modern Subaru of Boone.
Lewis is one of several fourth-generation Fowlers who have gone into the family business. Born and raised right here in Winston-Salem, he came on as a full-time employee in 2007 after working various part-time jobs in the dealerships since he was 14. Now as General Sales Manager of our Winston-Salem Nissan store, Lewis oversees the sales staff and ensures every customer gets that Fowler family commitment to complete satisfaction. Lewis and his wife Biby have two girls, Lily and Emily and they love to attend Wake Forest football games.
As one of the 4th generation of Fowlers at Modern, David chose to follow his dad, Rob, into the family business in 2009. David was born and raised right here in Winston-Salem, where he still lives with his wife and baby daughter. David attended Davidson College where he was on the golf team and earned his BA in Economics with a concentration in Applied Mathematics. He still enjoys playing a round of golf as well as taking in a Wake Forest game whenever he can. David has worked in sales and the Internet Department at our Nissan dealership as well as the Finance Department at Nissan and Toyota and the Service Department at Toyota.
Jerry joined the Modern team in 2011 as the Chief Financial Officer. He completed his undergraduate work at UNC Charlotte and earned his MBA right down the street at Wake Forest University. Jerry was previously with the Hendrick organization for 14 years. Jerry and his wife Alana have kids ranging in age from 4 to 24.
Angie is currently the Corporate Controller at Modern where she's been ensuring the numbers are lined up and accounted for since 1995. Angie lives in Advance with her husband and their black Labrador retriever, Owens. She graduated from Forsyth Tech Community College with a degree in Accounting. Angie likes shopping, gardening and travel.
Mike joined Modern Automotive in 2010 as General Counsel and Director of Compliance.
As basketball fans go, Mike may be our biggest! He was raised in Chapel Hill and is still a huge Tarheels fan. He also played college basketball at Avila University in Kansas City where he earned is Political Science degree, and now coaches his two daughters, Haley and Natalie, in their YMCA Youth Leagues!
After college, Mike worked for consumer advocate Ralph Nader as his personal assistant for 2 years before attending the University of Baltimore School of Law where he earned his law degree in 2001.
Mike operated his own law firm for 5 years and married Kirsten in 2000. They moved to Winston-Salem in 2001 where Kirsten is Section Chief for General Internal Medicine at WFUBC.
Mike burns calories working out at the gym and cheering on his favorite Tarheels. He and Kirsten enjoy traveling with their girls and have added two rescue mutts, Marley and Maddie, to the family. Mike and Kirsten were happy to return to the Tarheel state and love raising their children in Winston-Salem.
Kim came to Modern in 2012 with a BA in Economics from Salem College. She is Modern's Director of Financial Reporting and Analysis, so yes, she's good with numbers. Kim comes from a family-owned business and very quickly fit in with the Modern family here.
Kim and her husband, Steve, have one child, Timmy. Timmy is the catcher at High Point Christian Academy and it's a good thing he
Paul is our Director of Information Technology. He and his team keep Modern's computers and software running smoothly. Paul has been in the automotive business for 20 years working as a sales person, F&I Manager, New and Used Car Manager as well as a General Sales Manager. He picked up the computer bug in 2004 and began his life as an IT professional. Hmm….maybe computer bug isn't a good way to say that.
Paul is from New Orleans where he had the good fortune to have his elementary school, high school, college and favorite bar all on the same street!
He now lives in High Point with his wife of 19 years, Julie, and their two-year old cattle dog/pit bull mix, Millie, a rescue pup. Paul and Julie are avid cyclists and love everything from Cyclocross racing to mountain biking and road riding. They both also give significant amounts of their time to the High Point Cycling Classic, a charity organization that raises money by hosting a cycling festival, featuring the USA Professional Criterium Championship, in downtown High Point. Paul also enjoys traveling, music and wine, and recently took up woodworking. Just to prove he's a true Renaissance man, Paul also loves to cook.
Bryan is one of the nicest, kindest people you'll ever meet, which makes him a perfect fit for Modern's Community Relations Manager. Bryan truly enjoys helping people and the organizations that do that in and around our community. He comes to us from Michigan and says he's still a big Detroit sports fan. We're still working on changing that, but Bryan already loves the people, the weather and the BBQ here in North Carolina.
Bryan and his wife have been married for 30 years and have 3 sons. He is a former pastor and educator with a Master's Degree in Theology, and continues to be very active in his current church. When he's not coordinating community events for one of our dealerships, you might find him doing a remodeling project on his home, reading, listening to U2, or watching old reruns of "Gilligan's Island" and the original Batman TV series.
